Edible Garden Odyssey with Costa Georgiadis

TCOGA had the privilege of participating in the first episode of the Edible Garden Odyssey on September 10, 2023. President Kylie conducted a virtual tour of their gardens alongside Costa, sharing insights into various garden areas and answering viewer questions. TCOGA expresses gratitude to Community Gardens Australia President Naomi for this opportunity and acknowledges Costa for his outstanding support of the community. The Edible Garden Odyssey is a series highlighting diverse groups and organizations contributing to urban agriculture across the country. It sets the stage for Urban Agriculture month in November, in collaboration with hosts Sustain and Community Gardens Australia, leading up to the UAF Urban Agriculture Forum for 2023.

Trevor Watts

Visit from Trevor Watt local member for Southern Toowoomba

On Wednesday 20 September 2023, our local member Trevor Watts visited the gardens to catch up with members and see what we were doing.  This was the first time Trevor had been to the gardens and he was very impressed with the space and what we have done at the gardensHe understood the concept of the gardens having had an allotment garden in the UK when he was a childHe joined the members for morning tea with many discussions around various topics of the gardens, the vandalism we are experiencing and ideas for support with the various projects at the gardens.

We would like to thank Trevor for taking the time to visit us and look forward to him visiting again. 

THA 2

Visit from Therapeutic Horticulture Australia

On Saturday 23 September we have a group of 9 members from the Therapeutic Horticulture Association (THA) tour the gardens.  They were in Toowoomba for their Spring Meeting in conjunction with the Carnival and came from Melbourne, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.  There were many questions asked as we walked around the gardens, with great feedback from them.  Discussions around partnerships with disability and other organisations and opportunities between TCOGA and THA.  Thank you for Susan for arranging the tour and Carrie for assisting in the tour. 

Community Gardens Australia visit

Naomi Lacey, President from Community Gardens Australia (CGA) visited the gardens on Wednesday 27 September as part of her east coast road trip.    Naomi spoke to the members at morning tea about CGA, their vision and how they support the community gardens around Australia. 

Her enthusiasm, ideas and knowledge which she shared with us was fantastic demonstrating her committment and what we need to do to assist in the future of community gardens across Australia.  

Naomi then toured the gardens with one of the members discussing the various projects we have underway. Thanks Naomi for adding our gardens to your list on your east coast tour.

WORKSHOPS

Unveiling the Secrets of Successful Gardening: A Comprehensive Workshop for Enthusiasts and Beginners Alike

Tool workshop – 27 May 2023

The end of May 2023 saw TCOGA host a Tool and Maintenance workshop for its members and the general public.  The Toowoomba West Men’s Shed offered their time and expertise to lead this, demonstrating the importance of keeping tools clean, sharpened, oiled and in tip top condition.

Members were involved in hands on learning. The Toowoomba West Men’s Shed also donated a Grinder and built a small work bench for TCOGA members ongoing maintenance of their tools.

This workshop was possible due to the Australian Post Grant.

How to grow Mushrooms – 02 April 2023

Ken from Top of the Range Mushrooms provided a workshop about all things mushrooms.  He discussed the process of preparing the correct environment for your mushrooms, the different varieties of mushrooms, growing conditions to get the best produce and how to look after them.  Then those attendees that had purchased their kits, then put them together with Kens direction.  

This workshop was possible through the Australia Post grant. 

Introduction to RetroSuburbia Workshop – 11 March 2023

Facilitated by Debbie Bassingthwaighte this workshop brought to life David Holmgren’s vision of a sustainable, productive and vibrant permaculture lifestyle right in the suburbs where we live.  Debbie provided us with practical and positive solutions for retrofitting our homes, gardens and households and to build and empower resilient individuals and communities.

Permaculture workshop – 18 February 2023

Presented by the President of Permaculture Toowoomba Sara Hammer this workshop covered what permaculture is and why it is important, the principles of permaculture and introducing permaculture design thinking.  The group then undertook a site visit through the permaculture garden exploring and discussing the ideas they had learnt from the workshop.
